The Shoulder Complex Simplified
» A clinical reasoning approach to the assessment and treatment of the shoulder girdle”
Course description : This 2-day course will focus on the assessment and treatment of the shoulder girdle using cased based learning and a clinical reasoning approach including the latest evidence and research. The course will involve active participation and will have a large practical component. The cases will involve hypothesis generation based on a comprehensive subjective evaluation and physical exam. The treatment will involve strategies for managing patient education/expectations, manual therapy (joint capsule mobilizations, neurodynamics and soft tissue work), taping and a large exercise component. The focus will be on shoulder pain/impingement caused from a variety of reasons: restrictions of soft tissue and joint extensibility, central sensitization, neurodynamic and motor control dysfunctions of the upper and lower quadrant. Common conditions that will be seen include rotator cuff pathology, SLAP lesions and hyper and hypo- mobility of the scapulothoracic region and the glenohumeral joint. It will be an interactive, knowledge-sharing experience
Teacher : Teresa Gravelle Teresa Gravelle graduated with a BSc PT from McGill University in 1983 and an MClScPT from Western University in 2008. She received her FCAMPT in 1997 and the Clinical Specialist designation in MSK from the CPA in 2012.
She is currently an instructor with the Orthopaedic Division of the CPA and has taught the shoulder section of the level 2 and 3 upper many times since 2006.
She has over 27 years of experience in MSK based private practice.
Teresa’s interest in shoulders grew from finding shoulder girdle pain difficult and frustrating to treat early in her career. Over the years, she has taken numerous courses on the assessment and treatment of the shoulder and has tried to incorporate and simplify what she continues to learn when treating and teaching about the shoulder girdle.
